This October the American Energy initiative SunShot announced a $60 million funding opportunity to advance concentrating solar power in the United States.
The SunShot project aims to support research into technologies with potential to dramatically increase efficiency, lower costs, and deliver more reliable performance than existing commercial solar power systems, which is great news for us.
The Energy Department expects to fund 20 to 22 projects, and is looking to encourage industry specialists, universities, and National Laboratories to get involved.
But what exactly is concentrating solar power? Well this type of alternative energy uses mirrors to reflect and concentrate sunlight onto receivers that collect the solar energy, converting it into heat. This energy is then used to produce electricity via a steam turbine or alternative heat generator. However a key feature of concentrated solar power is the fact that it can be stored for up to several hours. So this means that even if the sun isn’t shining you can still produce the energy you need as prepared previously.
If you want to find out more about the sun’s capabilities as an alternative energy source all you have to do is get in touch with Solarking UK today and we’ll be happy to assist.
